Unfortunately we paid a visit to the Labor & Delivery unit last night after Mommy took a pretty bad spill off the steps of our stairs. The good news is Baby F is fine!
I was working on the baby album in the living room and decided it was time for a bathroom break, so I headed for down the three steps from our living/kitchen area. Well, apparently the traction on my house slippers is not very effective (although Daddy is convinced I was going too fast for myself). Regardless, I hit the edge of the second step with the ball of my foot and lost my balance. I literally flew into the air with my right leg in the air and the left one following. I landed hard on my butt and felt pain all through my back up into my neck and had an instant headache. The baby responded with a body part (butt, I think) sticking up/out of the left center of my belly for about a minute, then "disappeared" for about a little over an hour (no movements, I could not even pinpoint a body part and all of our "tricks" that usually work for movement checks, failed).
So, I called my doctor who said I needed to head to the labor and delivery unit in the hospital to have the baby monitored. Kevin left work, picked me up and we headed out. When we arrived at the unit, baby moved a little (which made me feel somewhat better) BUT we still wanted him checked. So, mommy and baby were monitored for about an hour and a half. Baby's heart rate was between 130-160 (it only seemed to go up high when he moved or I moved). The nurses kept a watchful eye on the monitors and said baby was looking great! They were a bit concerned that contractions were measuring in on the system and asked if I could feel them (I only felt some tightening in my uterus, which was VERY minor and only felt twice). So, they said since I am not feeling them they were likely just practice contractions BUT I am to monitor at home. If I have more than 5-6 contractions in an hour I have to go back to the hospital.
I was told to take it easy and given some specific instructions on monitoring both baby and myself for signs of labor. With the night I had and the pain I woke up with this morning taking it easy should not be a problem. UNFORTUNATELY we have so much to get done and I don't know how I am going to accomplish it now!!! So I am trying to focus on doing tasks like the baby book and other chores that can be done sitting down. My back hurts really bad, my head still hurts and my right foot/leg is more swollen than usual (my other foot is about 1/2 the size).
What we did learn (besides I MUST use the hand rail when going up/down stairs) was NO MORE PROCRASTINATION! Sitting in the hospital last night was a reality check for us both. We realized we don't have a hospital bag ready to go, we left the camera behind and Kevin was stressed that he did not charge his cell phone. Needless to say, we learned our lesson... that bag and those items need to be ready NOW/at all times, just in case we need them! So I will be spending today packing these things. What a wake up call!
Thankfully, Baby F is back to his active little self (side note--our childbirth instructor said that in her experience, really active babies are the most boisterous and high spirited--oh boy, do we have some exciting moments to look forward to!). Mommy is SORE, in some fairly bad pain, but RELIEVED our little guy is doing well. Sorry for the wild ride Baby F, mommy promises to be very careful from now on!
